ARCHERY RANGE PROTOCOLS AND SAFETY RULES

Safety is the primary focus for all activities supported by Range Burlington. Members planning to use the archery range are required to successfully complete a safety briefing and range orientation before using the range,

All policies, procedures and rules contained in the Burlington Rifle and Revolver Club manual, as revised, are in force at all times unless specifically stated otherwise herein.

Protocols
  • To use the archery range, you must swipe in on the clubhouse door. When you leave, please swipe in on the outside card reader and then out on the inside card reader.
  • The targets are fixed.
  • The first archer to the range sets the distance with the firing line markers.
  • Be respectful of other archers who wish to shoot at another distance.
  • Looking for lost arrows should be kept to a minimum if others are waiting.
  • Be respectful of the number of arrows shot if others are waiting.
  • Broad heads are not allowed on club targets.
  • Crossbows are only allowed on crossbow specific targets. Extra rules are to be followed.
  • Do not handle another archer’s equipment without their permission.
  • Do not pull another archer’s arrows from the target without their permission.
  • All firearms laws are always to be followed while using the archery range.
  • A range officer or executive member of the club has the right to suspend someone from the range for a breach of any club rules or any act they deem to be unsafe.
  • Safety violations or abuse of posted rules will lead to disciplinary action.
Safety
  • Always walk on the range, never run.
  • Archers are not allowed to shoot at different distances and must shoot from the same firing line.
  • All shots must be taken from posted positions at target butts only. Never shoot at other items on the ground or in the air.
  • Do not go forward of the firing line until all clear is given and all bows grounded.
  • If you drop an arrow in front of the firing line, leave it there until the all clear is given.
  • Never draw a bow with an arrow unless you are on the shooting line.
  • Never draw a loaded bow at anything other than the target.
  • Make sure the target area is clear of other people before shooting.
  • Do not shoot damaged equipment be it bows or arrows.
  • No person may be under the influence of any alcohol or drug, including prescription medication, which could impair their ability to act safely while at this range. This includes members, guests, and visitors even if they are not shooting.

ADDITIONAL CROSSBOW SPECIFIC RANGE RULES

Protocols
  • There is a mandatory orientation to be able to use crossbows at BRRC.
  • There is a written test to make sure the safety criteria of the range is understood.
  • The special X-Bow target must be used. The training will cover how to use these.
  • No Crossbows are to be shot at the standard archery targets.
  • The minimum distance for crossbows is 20 meters.
  • The maximum distance for crossbows is 40 meters.
Safety
  • Cock the crossbow just before you shoot.
  • Never leave a cocked bow unattended.
  • Only place the bolt on the deck with the crossbow level and pointed downrange.
  • Cocked and loaded crossbows should be no higher than 5 degrees plus or minus from level.
  • Never sky aim.
  • Finger off the trigger before you are ready to shoot.
  • Make sure the safety is on until you are ready to shoot.
  • Be aware of lateral hazards as the limbs move out and forward when the crossbow is fired.
